Lennox Lewis; Kids Should Learn Chess

It might not be a surprise to any other person, but when I saw that Lennox Lewis (the famous boxer who had his ear bitten by Mike Tyson) is a fan of chess, I was surprised. After retiring from boxing, he has gotten involved in many enterprises and charities. He is committed to helping kids get direction in their lives, and chess seems to be one of the ways kids can decide on how they are going to maneuver through life’s choices. “If you teach a kid chess, you teach him to sit down and think,” said Lewis

The Lennox Lewis Foundation tries to help kids stay out of trouble.  Lennox says that some of the best benefits to teaching kids chess are that “You think about strategy. You think about the next move. Chess is life. Most kids that play chess, they don’t go out and stab somebody because they’re thinking about the next move down the road, like ‘I could get in trouble and I could go to jail.’ Chess is good for kids in that sense.”  In my view chess is a very important game for children’s cognitive development and it should be promoted far more. It’s nice to know that there is another voice from a not-so-typical chess enthusiast.

Waning chess makes come back

If you type chess into Google trends, you’ll see some depressing results. The results will be especially depressing if you’re a chess fan in the USA. Over the past six years, searches for “chess” in Google have shrunk in half.  There are more searches for “chess” in the Philippines then in the USA.  Delhi is the city with the most searches followed by Oslo, and Tagalog is the most used language when searching for “chess” in Google.  I was glad to see that Seattle, my home city ranked seventh on Google’s chess searches.  But as far as world brainpower, most seem to be outside of the USA.  But, there is hope in the youth in our schools, as evidenced by an article in a Texan Newspaper.

The article was about a new chess club in the McKinney Elementary School Districts in Texas. They were formed not long ago and have sixty members. They had their first chess tournament recently, and forty kids showed up to compete. Good turnout for when measured up against any other organization. Of course, enthusiasm for chess wanes as children reach their teen years, so it is always best for them to start playing when they are young.  There are other clubs being started or restarted across the country.   The Aurora-Naperville Chess Club was recently started in Chicago after a decade-long absence.  Although over-all excitement for the game has diminished, there are some positive landmarks to give the sport hope.

NYC Kids Rule Chess?

Today I read an article in Wall Street Journal about how amazing their kids are at chess.  The main example they gave was at the national high school tournament in Nashville where the first three positions were taken be teams from NYC.  I’m happy that that kind of brain power can be found in the youth over there but why there why wouldn’t the brain power be found in Microsoft’s  home city of or silicon valley.  When I think of NYC I just think of a richer, hipper version of LA.

Ill admit it. I’m jealous.  I want my city to be the best.  And as a chess fan I’m glad chess is encouraged some where.  The way I’m getting over this is that NY is the trend setter and that other cities in other states will catch the chess bug and then my city of Seattle will be on the map.  After all it rains a lot of the time in the colder months so why wouldn’t us Seattlites stay indoors playing chess.

For now I’m saying congratulations to the Yanks back east and will look foreword to the tomorrow I want to have.

Today in Chess History

During my senior year of High School in 1997 the Chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov resigns after 19 moves in a game against Deep Blue, a chess-playing computer developed by scientists at IBM. He did alright up to the end of the fifth game but during the sixth and final game of their match, the computer squashed  Kasparov. He lost two games to one, with three draws. My first response was that it was one of excitement that a computer was finally made that could calculate all the moves enough to beet a grandmaster but then felt sad that humans could no longer stand against mindless computers.
